    November Workplace Food Service Insights-1

Now that October has officially come to a close…It's TIIIIIIME to thaw Mariah for the holiday season:

Okay, maybe we got a little ahead of ourselves, but one thing is for sure: It's time to break the ice and start thinking about how we can improve the workplace. Embracing new ideas and adapting to change is crucial for staying relevant and competitive, whether in your attendance strategy or office pantry offerings.

When you don't change, you fail, and this month's insights highlight the importance of fostering innovation to produce a workplace that people want to be part of. So maybe it's time to jump into the latest insights that will breathe innovation and fun back into your workplace:

Does chaotic hybrid and remote work kill innovation?

Research finds that structured in-person work increases the quantity and quality of new ideas.

Does chaotic hybrid and remote work kill innovation_

In the immortal words of Leslie Knope, "What's the point of doing anything if you're not having fun doing it with your friends?" Turns out, Leslie was onto something. New research suggests that chaotic hybrid and remote schedules might be holding back your team's creativity.

Here's what the University of Essex and the University of Chicago uncovered:

    • Fewer new ideas from uncoordinated hybrid teams: The study found that the average number of ideas per employee per month dropped by 22% in an unstructured hybrid environment.
    • The quality of ideas suffered the most for remote teams: In-person teams had better ideas than their remote counterparts. Hybrid teams

Here's the thing—innovation doesn't just happen by accident. It thrives in environments where connection and creativity can flow freely. Yet, getting people in the same room is only part of the battle. It's also about creating brain space. When teams spend mental energy trying to sync up schedules or scrambling with last-minute coordination, there's less bandwidth for creative thinking.

The tea: Create a routine that your team can rely on. That's where a structured hybrid approach comes in. It's not about constantly forcing everyone into the office—it's about giving them a reliable structure so they can focus their brainpower on big ideas instead of logistics.

But how you draw people into the office matters. Your food and beverage program can play a surprisingly powerful role in influencing that balance without feeling too formal or forced. Let's break it down with the two Cs:

    • Consistency: Free meals are a simple yet effective way to encourage routine office attendance. People will show up for food (we all know it's true), and that regular presence naturally aligns with in-office days without the need to mandate it.
    • Connection: The pantry becomes the ultimate conversation starter once people are in the office. A thoughtful pantry creates a landing zone for casual interactions, where team members can connect with team members outside of formal meetings.

Think about it—some of the best ideas pop up when you finally stop forcing them. The pantry gives people a natural incentive to take that space. "Innovation in the workplace can occur through random, spontaneous 'watercooler' conversations between employees," lead researcher Dr Christoph Siemroth explained in Science Daily. "However, these 'productive accidents' are less likely to occur when employees work from home."

The more people gravitate toward the space, the more opportunities for connection—and creativity—will follow. So, here's a look at some food trends you might want to adopt in 2025 to keep the energy and ideas flowing.

The top trends shaping the 2025 snackscape.

Whole Foods released its trend forecast for 2025.

The top trends shaping the 2025 snackscape.

We get super excited at any trend forecasts that comes across our desk, and the Whole Foods 2025 predictions are right up there with the best of them! We read through it so you don’t have to and here's a quick primer of all the trends:

    • International Snacking: Snack brands are fusing global flavors to make international tastes more accessible and popular.
    • Ever-Adaptable Dumpling: Dumplings are expanding into grocery aisles with innovative flavors and fusion options.
    • Crunch: This is the texture of the Moment. Crunchy textures are trending in snacks, salads, and even beverages to add satisfying texture.
    • Hydration Hype: Consumers want functional hydration with options like electrolyte-infused waters and cactus water.
    • Tea Time: Tea flavors and formats are on the rise, from desserts to sparkling teas and adaptogenic blends.
    • Next-Level Compostable: Brands are adopting home-compostable and sustainable packaging to reduce waste.
    • More-Sustainable Sips: Alcohol brands are leaning into sustainable practices with eco-friendly ingredients and packaging.
    • Sourdough Stepped Up: Sourdough is appearing in new forms, from bread to crackers, offering familiar flavors with a twist.
    • Plant-Based Aquatic Ingredients: Aquatic plants like seaweed and duckweed are gaining traction as nutritious, sustainable ingredients.
    • Protein Power-Up: Consumers seek more protein through whole foods, including organ meat blends and protein-rich vegetables.

The big theme here is that we want office snacks to do it all. They need to be bold, wellness-focused and made sustainably. That said, that doesn't mean you need to overhaul your pantry selection to accommodate each and every one of these trends. We don't expect you to be making your own sourdough starter to make bread for your employees; that would be crazy!

The tea: Use your knowledge of your team's consumption patterns and pick a few to lean into.

    • Subcategory Spending Trends: Track trends by looking at your category and subcategory spending month over month. For example, you might find that you've been spending less on sodas historically as more people are opting for still and sparkling water options for hydration. At that point, you may want to lean more toward hydration options and back off somewhere else.
    • Product Performance: This is a report we have in the Crafty Platform that showcases the fast and slow movers across your product list. You can even filter by category. For example, you may find that all your top movers in snack bars are crunchy, so you may want to invest more there.

We took a look at all our client data, and here's what trends we would prioritize based on our findings:

    • Crunchy Textures: While chips are classic, consider diversifying your offerings with crunchy elements in snack bars, sweets, and beyond. Think Undercover Quinoa Crisps, which are not only made with sustainable grains but also give that Crunch Bar nostalgia.
    • Hydration Hype: Employees seek drinks that provide powerful hydration with added benefits like electrolytes and vitamins. Coconut water is a great option that naturally has ingredients that hydrate more effectively, such as electrolytes like potassium, sodium and magnesium.
    • Protein Power: Protein continues to be a priority across all snack categories, not just bars or drinks. To meet this need, incorporate options like yogurt, protein pancake cups, and even chickpea puffs.

So, although we've spent the last few paragraphs discussing healthy snacks for work, who says we also don't want to enjoy a little treat?

"Little Treats" are getting your employees through the workday.

Our friends at ezCater report little treats are having a big moment.

_Little Treats_ are getting your employees through the workday.

Let's be real: sometimes, a little treat is the only thing standing between you and a total meltdown at work.

The "little treat culture" started as a TikTok trend, but now it's officially taking over the workplace! Here's what the report tells us:

    • 30% of workers indulge in at least one little treat per day.
    • 76% enjoy at least one treat per week.
    • Gen Z enjoys little treats more than other generations.

But it's not just about satisfying your sweet tooth for the sake of it. Employees use these little delights to fuel a more productive day.

    • 53% of employees use little treats for an energy boost
    • 42% of employees use little treats as a reward
    • 38% of employees use little treats as a stress reliever

The tea: You can have a healthy office pantry while embracing the little treat trend! Our data shows that 16% of overall pantry spend is dedicated to sweets and candy, with peanut M&Ms at the #1.

On the ezCater end, their report shows a similar trend. It's not expensive pick-me-ups taking the top spot, but the cost-effective and dependable staples. Here are the top five little treats from ezCater's report:

    1. Candy/Chocolate
    2. Salty Snacks
    3. Cookies
    4. Pastries
    5. Fruit

Finding the right balance between health and indulgence is essential. Plus, you can easily satisfy those cravings while keeping it healthier by opting for:

    • Dark chocolate to treat your team without the guilt
    • Fruit jerky for a naturally sweet snack
    • Low sugar options with brands such as MadeGood or UNREAL

So, as we wrap up, remember that little treats can boost morale and create a more enjoyable workplace, proving that you can have your cake and eat it, too.

    Conclusion

As we move into November, it's time to embrace innovation—not just in how we work but also in how we nourish our teams. You can influence your employees' creativity by fostering an environment that values both and provides employees with a sense of reliability while leaving room for something new and exciting to look forward to.

    Just to recap:

    • Structured attendance is key: Coordinating in-office attendance can foster innovation. Your pantry might just be the birthplace for the next big idea!
    • Lean into the trends that will make an impact: There are so many trends coming in 2025, but use your consumption data to lean into the ones that will make an impact.
    • Embrace little treats: Even though employees are leaning toward healthy options, you shouldn't count out the power of a treat.

As we head into the end of the year, it's the perfect time to reflect on your current corporate food offering and think about how you can innovate it for the future. While trends change, one thing is clear—we're all hungry for connection, innovation and a little sweet treat!
