Chicago may be home, but New York City has always held a special place in my heart. It’s where I’ve spent time living and building Crafty’s East Coast presence, and if you ever had the pleasure of visiting you know it’s a city that never fails to inspire. So on my recent trip to the Big Apple, I wasn’t just there to catch up with Crafty’s local clients, I tasked myself with getting a firsthand look at the evolving landscape of work in the nation’s largest city.
What struck me most on this visit was how deeply New Yorkers understand that offices aren’t just spaces—they’re living, breathing ecosystems that reflect the changing needs of a modern workforce. In a city where small living spaces and dense urban environments encourage people to work outside of the house, the office becomes more than just a place to clock in. It’s a vital hub for connection, collaboration, and creativity.
Understanding New York’s evolving office culture is essential—not just for Crafty, but for anyone invested in building vibrant, connected workplaces in The Empire State and beyond. Experiencing it firsthand reminded me of the opportunities ahead and the importance of staying curious, adaptive, and open to change (yes, even when it comes to snacks).
Here are my key observations and actionable tips for making office spaces in New York City more attractive:
Top Trends in New York City’s Office Culture
The Shift Back to Office Spaces
Unlike cities where remote work remains the norm, New Yorkers are gravitating back to office spaces in droves, and it’s not just about the desk. In a city where personal space is a luxury, the office has evolved into a crucial "third place". Part workspace, part community hub. It’s a space where people can find the focus they might get in a coffee shop or library, but with the added value of collaboration and purpose.
The city’s inherently social nature is also playing a key role in this resurgence. Face-to-face interactions matter here. The desire to reconnect and collaborate in person is driving attendance back to pre-pandemic levels—and then some. In fact, recent data shows that by the end of 2024, New York City surpassed pre-pandemic benchmarks, leading major U.S. office markets with a remarkable 25.3% year-over-year growth. This trend is fueled primarily by strong demand from the tech and finance sectors, cementing New York’s position as a leader in the evolving office landscape.
Emerging Food and Beverage Trends
As a snack executive, the bright lights and powerplays couldn’t distract me from noticing trends in consumption. From bodegas to office lounges I was constantly reminded that coffee culture is practically a way of life for New Yorkers and that they’re particular about where their brews come from. While national brands offer consistency across markets, they simply can’t compete with the authenticity and flavor of local roasts. Or the demand for it.
Local roasters like La Colombe, Joe Coffee Company, Irving Farm, and Birch Coffee are just a few of the names making waves in workplace setups. These roasters bring more than just caffeine to the table—they represent the city’s commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and active community engagement.
It makes sense when you consider that New Yorkers are known to drink 6.7 to 7 times the amount of coffee compared to the average U.S. city. This deep-rooted love for coffee dates back to the early 1800s when New York emerged as a major coffee roasting center in the United States. Today, the city boasts more coffee shops per capita than any other American city, reinforcing its reputation as a coffee capital.
This preference for local coffee also aligns with a broader movement toward sustainability and thoughtful consumption. Choosing neighborhood roasters over big chains not only enhances the coffee experience but also reflects a dedication to uplifting small businesses. It’s this connection to the community that sets New York’s office culture apart, and it’s something we’re passionate about supporting at Crafty.

The Unstoppable Energy of New York
The palpable energy of New York is evident in its workplaces. People are returning to offices at a faster rate than in other markets, driven by a desire to be "in the mix" with their colleagues. This enthusiasm is mirrored in the real estate sector, where top-tier Manhattan buildings are experiencing high demand and low vacancy rates. For instance, iconic skyscrapers like 30 Rockefeller Plaza and the Empire State Building have thrived, with the latter being more than 90% leased after significant restorations.
It’s a clear signal that companies recognize the importance of maintaining a physical presence in New York’s core. These offices are more than just workspaces; they’re cultural hubs where people feel connected to both their teams and the city itself. New York is showing the rest of the country that when office spaces are thoughtfully designed and culturally aligned, they become more than a place to work—they become essential to how people live, collaborate, and thrive.
How Crafty is Supporting New York's Unique Workplaces
At Crafty, we understand that New York workplaces are more than just places to get things done—they’re vibrant, collaborative environments that foster community and innovation.
